Al-Azhar’s Contact Office and Branch inaugurated at Jamia Al-Karam

Jamia Al-Karam officially opens the UK Branch of the World Association for Al-Azhar Graduates

ImageOn Sunday 15 May 2011, the United Kingdom Branch of the World Association for Al-Azhar Graduates (WAAG) and the Al-Azhar Contact Office in Great Britain was inaugurated at Jamia Al-Karam in Retford, Nottinghamshire.

Al-Azhar University in Cairo, Egypt, is the oldest centre of Islamic learning in the Muslim world with a tradition of balanced scholarship going back for over a thousand years. It is the leading voice of moderation and balance and aims to portray the accurate picture of Islam and the message of the holy Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) to the world. In pursuit of promoting this moderate stance and furthering a dialogue between the balanced scholarship of the ancient seat of Islamic learning at Al-Azhar and the modern Western world, Jamia Al-Karam has been honoured to be the Al-Azhar contact office and the UK branch of WAAG.

The ceremony at Jamia Al-Karam was attended by Shaykh Abdal Hakim Murad (T J Winter, from the University of Cambridge and the Cambridge Muslim College), Lord Nazir Ahmed of Rotherham, Fayyaz Gafour (COO, ARY Network) as well as numerous guests and graduates of Jamia Al-Karam and Al-Azhar University.

Bakhtyar H Pirzada Al-Azhari (Vice Principal of Jamia Al-Karam and Vice President of WAAG UK Branch) discussed the history of Jamia Al-Karam and its relationship with Al-Azhar. In his address, he commented, “Jamia Al-Karam has produced over 150 British Islamic scholars of whom 35 have further graduated from Al-Azhar University. The relationship between the two institutions goes back to 1951 when the late Justice Shaykh Muhammad Karam Shah al-Azhari, after who Jamia Al-Karam is named, began his studies at Al-Azhar University under the tutelage of the great scholars of Al-Azhar including Dr Ahmad Zaki, Dr Mustafa Shilbi and the prominent Imam Muhammad Abu Zahra. Jamia Al-Karam itself gained academic affiliation with Al-Azhar University in 1999 … There is a dire need for the balanced approach which is deeply rooted in knowledge, education and the scholarship of Al-Azhar to be further promoted in the West so that a dialogue in pursuit of greater understanding and harmony begins and a front is established against misinterpretations of Islam and negative notions leading to extremism and fanaticism. The objective is to portray the true eminent picture of Islam in a world increasingly being filled with confusion and conjecture, and for that Al-Azhar represents an important platform.”

Zein Hud Al-Azhari (Lecturer at Jamia Al-Karam and Administrative Officer of WAAG UK Branch) further elaborated upon the role of Al-Azhar and Jamia Al-Karam and commented upon the visit of the former Chancellor of Al-Azhar University, Dr Ahmad Umar Hashim, to Jamia Al-Karam in 2001 and awarding Al-Azhar’s ‘Shield of Excellence Award’ to the Founder and Principal of Jamia Al-Karam, Shaykh Muhammad Imdad Hussain Pirzada.

Maulana Amjad Aziz Al-Azhari (Graduate of DMG Bhera, Pakistan and Al-Azhar University) who had recently arrived from Cairo relayed the sentiments of the Vice President of the World Association for Al-Azhar Graduates, Dr Abd al-Fudayl al-Qawsi, regarding the UK Branch saying, “Dr al-Qawsi expressed his joy at the opening of the UK Branch at Jamia Al-Karam stating that he felt the trust of Al-Azhar had been forwarded to the institution worthy of it.”

The Founder and Principal of Jamia Al-Karam and the President of the World Association for Al-Azhar Graduates UK Branch, Shaykh M I H Pirzada then offered his words of congratulations to all those associated with Jamia Al-Karam and forwarded words of gratitude towards the Grand Imam, Shaykh Al-Azhar, Dr Ahmad Al-Tayyeb, upon this bestowal and enhanced partnership between the two institutions.

Shaykh Abdal Hakim Murad from the University of Cambridge and the Cambridge Muslim College commented upon the blessedness (barakah) within the long tradition of Al-Azhar and welcomed this new connection and link between Al-Azhar and Jamia Al-Karam. Speaking to the audience of young British Imams and scholars he elaborated upon the value of knowledge and the integrity of character that goes with it and the true significance of this for those who have knowledge.

In the end, Lord Nazir Ahmed of Rotherham spoke about his joy at visiting Jamia Al-Karam after some time and seeing the continual progress being made. Regarding the Principal of Jamia Al-Karam, he commented, “Pirzada Sahib has the ability of bringing people and things together and he is always ready to stand up for Islam when challenging notions come before it.” He congratulated all on the opening of the office and branch and welcomed such an initiative.

Messages of support and congratulations were also received from the Member of Parliament for Newark and former Shadow Minister for Homeland Security, Mr Patrick Mercer OBE MP, the Egyptian Ambassador to the UK, His Excellency Hatem Seif El Nasr, and the Minister Plenipotentiary at the Egyptian Embassy in London, Mr Yasser Shaban, who were all unable to attend the opening ceremony in person due to other engagements.

During the day, the guests also toured the construction works at Eaton Hall for the new girls boarding school which is underway. Following lunch and Zuhr Prayer, the programme came to a close.
