On Thursday 11 June 2015, Shaykh Muhammad Imdad Hussain Pirzada visited Lambeth Palace in London to meet with the Grand Imam of Al-Azhar, Shaykh Dr Ahmad al-Tayyeb, and the Archbishop of Canterbury, Rt Hon Justin Welby. The Grand Imam came to London for a two-day visit and was hosted by the Archbishop at the Palace.

The Grand Imam of Al-Azhar, Shaykh Dr Ahmad al-Tayyeb, is the leader and head of the world’s historic University of Al-Azhar which represents an influential intellectual tradition of Islam for over a millennium. He is counted amongst the top influential Muslims in the world and is also Chairman of the World Association for Al-Azhar Graduates, which now holds Special Consultative Status with the United Nations’ Economic and Social Council. Shaykh Muhammad Imdad Hussain Pirzada is the Founder and Principal of the influential United Kingdom educational institution ‘Jamia Al-Karam’ based in Retford, Nottinghamshire. He is President of the United Kingdom Branch of the World Association for Al-Azhar Graduates and is a recipient of Al-Azhar’s prestigious award ‘The Shield of Excellence’ (al-dir‘ al-mumtaz). The Archbishop of Canterbury, Rt Hon Justin Welby, is the senior most bishop and principal leader of the Church of England and the head of the worldwide Anglican Communion, whose official residence is Lambeth Palace in central London.

Shaykh Pirzada had an initial private meeting with the Grand Imam, which was then followed by a meeting over lunch with the Archbishop. The lunch and meeting was also attended by Shaykh Dr Muhyuddin al-Afifi (Secretary-General of Al-Azhar’s Islamic Research Institute of Cairo), Professor Dr Abdul Daim Nusaer (Secretary-General of the World Association for Al-Azhar Graduates), Reverend Dr Mouneer Hanna Anis (Bishop of the Anglican Diocese of Egypt with North Africa) and Revd Mark Poulson (Secretary for Inter Religious Affairs to the Archbishop of Canterbury and National Inter Religious Affairs Adviser to the Church of England).

In a respectful and pleasant atmosphere, numerous discussions on a variety of themes continued including interfaith relations, the role of the Anglican Church, the role of Al-Azhar, the Christian and Muslim communities in Britain and around the world, and many other insightful and scholarly topics. The meeting at Lambeth Palace comes as a continuation in endeavours following the ‘Agreement for Dialogue between the Anglican Communion and al-Azhar al-Sharif’, which was signed in 2002 by the then Grand Imam, Shaykh Dr Sayyid Tantawi, and the then Archbishop, Rt Hon George Carey.
